Copenhagen, Denmark – what to see

In Denmark the distances are short, so it’s possible to see a great part of the country when you choose to travel in the country.

The most interesting city to visit in Denmark is the capitol: Copenhagen. In Copenhagen there’s a very easy and cheap way to get around: Free bicycles.

You get these bikes by putting in a coin that you get back when you return the bike.

The bikes can be found everywhere.

If you take a look at the Denmark travellers on these bikes you only see smiles and lots of fun.

Denmark’s art

If you are looking for art in Copenhagen a good place to begin would be The National Art Gallery (Statens Museum for Kunst). The reason why this is a good place to start is that the gallery shows art from the 14. century up to the present day.

And if you like to look at architecture, the museums buildings are themselves a beautiful peace of art.

The Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek is a wonderful experience. When people in Denmark say glyptotek they mean a collection of sculpture.

If you’re looking for modern art in Copenhagen you should see the very famous Louisiana – Museum of Modern Art. This museum is however placed 35 kilometres (21 miles) north of Copenhagen, in the city Humlebæk.

Copenhagen Jazz Festival 2008

July 4-13 is the jazz period in Denmark. This period contains more than 900 concerts. Both international and Danish jazz musicians give small and big jazz concerts all over the city.

Nyhavn (New Harbour)

It began as a trading harbour in the 17. century. But today the place is more known for the lively cafés and restaurants. In the summer time the place is always crowded, and you always find funny events in the area. The bars have live music and the food is good, but not the cheapest in Copenhagen. You can be sure that the mood is just right every time you come to Nyhavn. And the place is very central so it’s possible to take quick glance at other areas in Copenhagen after your first cold beer or meal.

If you prefer a quit area when you eat this is not your dining area.

Tivoli Gardens

This is a very popular amusement park. It can be compared to Disneyland. It’s a wonderful place for both children and grown people.




The little mermaid



H.C. Andersen is the author fairy tale The little mermaid.



The story inspired the artist Edvard Eriksen to create the famous statue The little mermaid, which stands in Copenhagen on a place called Langelinje. Eriksen used his wife as a model for the statue. It was made en 1913.



There’s a long story behind the statue. In 1964 the head of it was cut of by another Danish artist.



Today it is one of Denmark’s biggest tourist attractions.
